Yesterday, Thursday evening, was the official opening of Gallery Central Berlin at Strausberger Platz as part of the “CENTRAL BERLIN – DDR limited” book launch.
What you can discover at the newly open gallery in Berlin?
Visitors of the gallery at Strausberger Platz 16-18 can have a look at absolute DDR design classics selected by interior designer Stephan Schilgen. He is using the gallery to showcase DDR furniture design and home styling inspirations. These have been arranged in living room constellations in three “Room Boxes”, each with its own distinctive ambience. Original modern-classic elements ensure that the interior design is both unique and authentic. These elements include an original neon light box from the old Aeroflot travel agency on Unter den Linden and sections of the metal ceiling from the nightclub bar in Café Moskau.
Alongside these original and exclusive furnishings and lamps from the early days of the DDR the gallery also presents mid-century furniture from Czechoslovakia, Poland, the USSR, Germany, France, Italy, England and the USA. The gallery draws its inspiration from Karl-Marx-Allee, the world’s foremost example of mid-century Socialist-Classical architecture. This stylized architecture, influenced by Schinkel, blends Soviet “gingerbread” design with Bauhaus components – a style mix reflected in Stephan Schilgen’s interior worlds.
